Carbon dioxide lasers have been in use for many years to treat non-cancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) skin conditions. A new generation of carbon dioxide lasers uses very short-pulsed light energy (ultra-pulsed) or continuous light beams that are delivered in a scanning pattern. The ability to rejuvenate sun-damaged, wrinkled skin has been revolutionized by this new technology. Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing joins other treatment options including tretinoin (Retin-A®) products, vitamin C lotion, alpha hydroxy acids, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, collagen or fat augmentation, and botulinum toxin (Botox®) for decreasing facial lines and scars.

If you are interested in learning how a CO₂ laser resurfacing treatment can help some of your skin conditions, call us today for a consultation with one of our specialists.
The first step on the road to getting a CO₂ laser resurfacing treatment at Geria Dermatology is to book a consultation with one of our providers. During this session, you will discuss your goals and examine the problematic areas, which the provider can then assess. It is important to share any crucial medical history or health issues with our providers so that we can give you correct information regarding whether CO₂ laser resurfacing is right for you, and how it can benefit you. If you are interested in treating multiple areas, this is also a good thing to discuss during consultation.
Once your personalized treatment plan is created, our Patient Coordinator will help you schedule your procedure date and provide you with instructions to follow that will help you achieve optimal results.
Before your procedure, your provider may give you a list of instructions to prepare you for CO₂ laser skin resurfacing. These may include abstaining from topical creams and medications.
On the day of your procedure, your provider will first administer a type of anesthesia to numb the skin and treatment areas. Before the treatment begins, your skin will be thoroughly cleaned and you’ll receive special eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser.
During the treatment, the dermatologist or surgeon will move the laser wand slowly over the area of the skin being treated. You may receive an ice pack to apply to the treated area for 15 minutes to prevent swelling.
Finally, an antibacterial ointment and non-stick dressing will be applied to the treated skin. Leave this on as instructed, usually for 24 hours. Once your treatment is complete, your provider will give you a list of instructions to take care of your skin after you return home.
A partial-face laser resurfacing takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the full-face treatment takes one-and-a-half to two hours.
You may be instructed to clean the treated areas two to five times a day with saline or a dilute vinegar solution. You can then apply Vaseline, Eucerin, or Aquaphor to the area. This wound care is intended to prevent the forming of any scabs, which can increase the chance of scarring and prolong the healing time.
In general, the areas heal in 10 to 21 days, depending on the nature of the condition that was treated and the intensity of the laser settings. The stronger the settings, the longer the recovery time.
Once the areas have healed, you can wear oil-free makeup to camouflage the pink-to-red color that is generally seen after laser resurfacing. The redness in the laser-treated sites generally fades in two to three months but may take as long as six months to disappear.
You should avoid sun exposure for four weeks before laser treatment and liberally apply sunscreens pre- and post-procedure.
How much?
The cost CO₂ laser resurfacing in New Jersey will vary depending on the following factors including the areas of skin being treated, the amount of time needed to treat your issues, and the number of appointments determined by your provider.
During your consultation, your provider will map out a treatment plan to give you the best results for your goals and determine the price you will expect to pay.
